We were delighted to welcome Dame Rachel de Souza, the Children’s Commissioner for England, to our Scunthorpe site today.
As part of her mission to gather a million young voices for the biggest ever survey of children, Dame Rachel spoke to several of our apprentices to hear from them about their journeys from school to the workplace and the experience of entering the world of work as a young person.
Having grown up in Scunthorpe with family that has worked at British Steel, this was a special visit for the Commissioner, and we were happy to welcome her and Scunthorpe MP Sir Nic Dakin.
Dame Rachel de Souza said: “This was a very special visit. The steel works is where my father and both my grandfathers made a proud living. But it’s about looking forward too – British Steel represents an exciting future for the region I grew up in.
“Throughout my time as the Children’s Commissioner, I’ve made sure that politicians can’t ignore young people as they make decisions that impact children’s lives. As Westminster debates how to get young people into work, I want to give the brilliant apprentices and graduates in Scunthorpe the chance to have their say.
“I've spoken to young people up and down the country – they want great jobs, and this group are no different. I visited just as the apprentices and graduates began their exciting journey at British Steel. I was inspired by their ambition and grateful to them for sharing their messages for the government.”
