British Steel is set to recruit more than 40 new apprentices and graduates for 2027, providing an opportunity for people to launch a rewarding career in one of the UK's largest steelmaking companies.

The fresh opportunities follow another significant investment in early careers talent in 2026, with the business welcoming 70 new apprentices across its sites in September.

Applications for the company’s 2027 intake are now welcome, with opportunities available at British Steel’s Scunthorpe, Teesside, and Skinningrove sites.

Alongside the apprenticeship intake, applications are also open for several graduate positions, offering multiple routes into a long-term engineering career with the business.

The new roles, which start in early September 2027, include:

  • Scunthorpe: 12 electrical apprenticeships and 12 mechanical apprenticeships
  • Northern Mills (Teesside and Skinningrove): 8 electrical apprenticeships and 8 mechanical apprenticeships

British Steel’s apprenticeship programme combines hands-on experience with fully funded training and nationally recognised qualifications, allowing apprentices to earn while they learn. Successful candidates will begin with specialist training before moving into operational areas of the business, where they will work alongside experienced colleagues and develop the skills needed to support steelmaking operations.

British Steel is also recruiting graduates in 2027 for roles in:

  • Manufacturing operations
  • Mechanical engineering
  • Electrical engineering
  • Materials engineering (quality and process)

Further graduate opportunities in other business functions are expected to be released in the coming weeks.

The opportunities build on the successful relaunch of British Steel's graduate recruitment programme earlier this year. In September, 16 graduates joined the business, becoming the first to do so since 2022 and marking an important milestone in developing future talent across the organisation.

Whether starting out through an apprenticeship or joining as a graduate, successful applicants will gain valuable experience in a major UK manufacturer, working on real projects while developing the technical and professional skills needed to build a successful career.

Applicants for the apprenticeship programme will need a minimum of three GCSEs at Grade 4/C or above, including Maths, English and Science, together with a positive attitude, strong work ethic and willingness to learn.

Apprentices will receive a competitive package, including 35 days' holiday (including bank holidays), a company pension scheme, health cash plan, Employee Assistance Programme, all required safety clothing and access to discounts at local businesses. British Steel’s aim is to offer permanent employment opportunities on successful completion of the programme.

Apprenticeship applications close on 8 March 2027 while graduate applications close on 26 February 2027.

Nick Ashton, HR Director at British Steel, said: “The steel industry offers a huge variety of career opportunities, and we're committed to helping people develop the skills and confidence they need to build successful and rewarding careers.

“Investing in future talent is essential to the long-term success of our business and we're proud to continue creating opportunities for young people in the communities that have supported British Steel for generations, from Scunthorpe to Teesside and Skinningrove.

“Many of our colleagues began their careers through apprenticeship and graduate programmes and have gone on to hold key roles across the organisation. We want to attract ambitious people who are eager to learn, develop their skills and play a part in the future of British Steel.”
