British Steel has welcomed 17 Northern mills apprentices, who this week started their inductions with our training provider, TTE, in partnership with Middlesborough College.
So far, they have been getting started on their workshop induction, getting used to different work areas, tools, and any hazards they might come across, as well as covering standards, expectations and college values in their classroom induction. They will spend a year training with TTE before starting their placements at our Teesside and Skinningrove sites.
Their arrival follows that of the 36 apprentices that joined us last week at our Scunthorpe site and completes the 70 total new apprentices and graduates we have starting with us this year.
Harry Lorains, a first-year Engineering Apprentice for our Northern mills, said: “I knew I wanted to find an apprenticeship after college, and British Steel have been on my radar since I finished school - they have such a strong history in the industry.
“I'm most excited about the practical sessions in the workshop, as that's where I'll be able to get hands-on training and really learn the trade.
“After this apprenticeship, I plan to progress through my HNC and HND qualifications and eventually become chartered in the field."
Darlie Salmons, one of our fellow first-year Electrical Apprentices at TTE, said: “I've only just left school, but I've always wanted to work in a hands-on, practical role.
“I looked at different types of engineering, but I kept coming back to this apprenticeship at British Steel. It was by the far the best opportunity for what I want to do! I can't wait to get stuck into the practical sessions and learn how to wire.
“I'm keeping my options open for the future, but I know I definitely want a career in this industry.”
