We’re proud to support the upcoming Scunthorpe Steel exhibition, highlighting the people, places, and processes behind the town’s steelmaking heritage.
The exhibition will take place from 11 July-26 September at the 20-21 Visual Arts Centre in Scunthorpe and brings together previous photographic projects.
Richard Heeps’ ‘Rolled Out’ project is a visual record of the Bloom and Billet mill, photographed prior to its closure in 2007, and former Scunthorpe steelworker Ian Lee’s ‘88 and Out’ series documents the Plate Mill and its decommissioning.
These will be accompanied by a new series of photographs by Ian, documenting the Blast Furnaces and Continuous Casting mill. Films on show include the cinematic film ‘British Steel - The Movie’, reclaimed previously unseen historical footage from the British Steel archive, and the documentary ‘A Steelworker's Story’ by artist Michael Burkitt.
Volunteers at the Appleby-Frodingham Railway have also contributed a reel of films they have researched and digitised, which document over 100 years of steelmaking in Scunthorpe from the archives of British Steel.
There is also an open call for members of the public to submit photographs that present images of people, places and objects that represent what the steel industry in Scunthorpe means to them. Professional and amateur photographers interested in taking part can find out more here.
The exhibition is free to enter and can be visited Tuesday-Saturday from 10am-4pm.
