Top 30 under 30

We are proud to announce that Site Fuel Engineer Michael Atkin has been recognised as one of this year’s Humber Top 30 Under 30, a prestigious honour celebrating emerging talent making a significant impact across the region.

Michael, who joined the business in 2014, was nominated by his manager, Edward Arnott, Operations Director for Energy. In the application, Edward highlighted not only Michael’s technical capability but also his standout contribution as the youngest person to hold the role. He also emphasised Michael’s leadership qualities, his commitment to developing others and his strong drive to improve that has shaped much of his work.

In his role, Michael delivers value across a wide range of business-critical areas. He supports gas distribution, fuel utilisation and maintenance, helping teams operate safely and efficiently while continually identifying opportunities for improvement. He also facilitates gas safety training, promoting a strong safety culture that has contributed to the Fuel Department recently achieving three years of zero harm. Alongside operational responsibilities, Michael plays a key part in the business’ environmental compliance, supporting work on the UK Emissions Trading Scheme (UK ETS), carbon footprint reporting, and the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) for steel exported to the EU.

Speaking about the award, Michael said: “I’m incredibly proud to be recognised among so many inspiring young professionals. This achievement reflects the support of my team and the opportunities I’ve been given to grow my career at British Steel.”

Edward added: “Michael’s commitment to innovation and excellence exemplifies the talent we’re developing across our business. We’re delighted to see his hard work celebrated on a regional stage, and his drive to improve is evident in everything he does.”

As part of the Humber Top 30 Under 30 programme, Michael will now take part in LEAP, a leadership development course designed to build confidence and equip participants to influence and deliver positive change. We look forward to supporting him as he continues to develop and make an impact across the business.
