There’s still time to apply – so get your application in – but what can the successful candidates expect? We sat down with a couple of our apprentices from the 2025 intake to discuss how their first five months in training has gone.
Geraint King and Kieran Poole, who both joined us in September, are already embracing the challenges and opportunities of their training at our training provider CATCH. They said the experience has been both eye-opening and rewarding.
Geraint said the sheer volume of learning has surprised him: “I didn’t expect to learn as much as we have,” he explained. “We’ve learned how to use a lot of different machinery, all the different welding techniques, all the different plating techniques.”
Looking ahead, he’s excited to apply his new skills in a real operational environment: “I’m most excited to go onto site and do the real thing,” Geraint said. “Here, we’re learning to be tested, but nothing beats applying your skills practically in a real steelmaking environment.”
For Kieran, welding has been the standout. “I wasn’t very confident with my welding skills at first,” he admitted, but over time he’s “seen the beauty in it,” especially the precision needed to create a strong weld. He finds motivation in the heritage and importance of the industry, saying: “It’s very important that we make our own steel… you see it everywhere in construction.”
