How long have you been working at British Steel?
I started at British Steel in 2009 as a communications placement from Lincoln University where I studied advertising and marketing. After trying a few different roles within the company, I joined the marketing team as an analyst for our Construction business. I am now a marketing lead for Wire Rod and Special Profiles.
What does your day-to-day role involve?
My job is very varied. My current duties include creating, managing and delivering bespoke marketing plans for individual campaigns; analysing the success of marketing activities; managing a customer satisfaction programme; preparing for and exhibiting at exhibitions on behalf of the business; and carrying out a range of marketing communications activities.
How would you describe the culture of British Steel and how you fit into it?
I think that the best way to describe British Steel’s culture is like a family – I always feel that I am well looked after. One of the most important things for me is the range of opportunities you can find within the company; this makes me want to perform at my best and I feel proud to work for British Steel.
What do you think is the best thing about working for British Steel?
I love the belief and encouragement from other people. This has allowed me to have the chance to try different roles and develop my skillset in a variety of areas.
How has working for British Steel improved you as a person and your skills?
Working here has helped me develop a wide range of skills. I think that I’m a different person now than when I started here. I am more confident, my communication skills have improved, I’m better at project managing, using software and I have more initiative.
If you could describe British Steel in just three words, what would they be?
I think they would have to be pride, passion and performance. I feel proud to work in a company that is recognised by businesses nationally and internationally. Passion is shared between all the people at British Steel – we all want to make things work and be the best we can. Everyone here also has a positive mindset where we want to pull together and perform the best we can.
What advice would you give to other people considering a career with us?
They should always stay open-minded to opportunities within the company; this was a big part of my career at British Steel. I started in Communications and, after trying a few different roles, I found that marketing is what I enjoy the most and where I work now; without taking these opportunities I wouldn’t have discovered this.
I would say be prepared to work hard and take any experience you can.
