Building Stronger Communities

Building Stronger Futures

Being a good neighbour and contributing to the well-being of our communities is a key priority for us. By listening to our local community and stakeholders we endeavour to support their needs.

Our teams are always looking for ways that they can help, whether that’s collecting food for the local food bank or working with suppliers to donate Christmas gifts to those in need.

Community Partnership with Scunthorpe United

In 2025 British Steel pledged its support to the town’s football club with a community partnership that includes the British Steel logo featuring front and centre on the training shirts and coaching facilities for the 25/26 season.

The Scunthorpe United team now train at the British Steel Training Ground, wearing shirts emblazoned with the familiar British Steel logo.

Both British Steel and ‘The Iron’ are both huge parts of Scunthorpe’s identity and this partnership reflects that.

Health and Wellbeing

Our Occupational Health team work with many external partners to provide additional support for our colleagues, include support for mental health, cancer awareness and stopping smoking support.

As part of this work they have built strong partnerships and have become supporters of some of these organisations.

In 2025, working in partnership with North Lincolnshire Council, British Steel hosted the first leg of the Baton of Hope tour at our Scunthorpe site. The Baton of Hope is a registered charity formed by Mike McCarthy and Steve Phillip, who lost their sons to suicide and works to raise awareness of suicide prevention.

In recognition of the support MIND North Lincolnshire has provided on site we sponsored the first ever Mental Elf Fun run in November 2025 which raised vital funds for the services they provide in the local area.

Our Occupational Health team are also working with Social Science Students at John Leggot College, We Are With You North Lincolnshire, who provide drug and alcohol support and Humber and North Yorkshire Cancer Alliance, to raise awareness of cancer symptoms.

Educational Liaison

Since 2025 our Educational Liaison programme has continued to grow, strengthening our links with local schools, colleges and universities, helping young people gain a clearer understanding of the world of work.

Our team has supported a wide range of activities, including careers fairs, school assemblies and classroom sessions. These events give students the opportunity to explore different career pathways, hear first-hand experiences from our colleagues and ask questions about working life in a supportive environment.

As part of this work we have hosted a number of educational visits to our site, supporting students to understand the real-world applications of their studies.

We’re also working in partnership with John Leggot College to support science students through a new project designed to build skills and strengthen links with industry.

Projects like this help us engage earlier with future talent, raise awareness of careers in steel and manufacturing, and strengthen our relationships with local education partners — supporting British Steel’s long-term skills pipeline.
