Please provide a brief overview of your first role with British Steel and the journey you’ve taken to your current role
I started on 1 September 1980 as a clerical apprentice. After trying several departments I decided I would like to follow a finance career. My first role was at Dawes Lane Coke Ovens in Scunthorpe where I worked as a works records clerk; I then moved around various finance departments whilst studying to become a Chartered Management Accountant.
In 1992, I was appointed Commercial Accountant and in the early 2000s I decided to move over to Marketing followed by Product Management and Planning at the Rod Mill. I was then asked if I would consider moving back into Finance and am once again a Commercial Accountant – probably my favourite role.
How long have you been with the business?
Too many to count! It was 45 in September 2025.
What does your day-to-day role involve?
I’m responsible for providing information to manage the business relating to sales and all associated activities.
Why do you enjoy working for British Steel?
British Steel has supported me over the years and allowed me to train to be a Chartered Accountant. I have seen many changes, which cycle around every 5 years or so, but the one constant is the people with whom you work, many of which are very dedicated and enthusiastic, which is infectious.
I think the team spirit is what keeps you motivated and I enjoy the role of a commercial accountant, it offers various challenges and can be very rewarding.
What advice would you give to other people considering a career at British Steel?
Work hard, be enthusiastic and have respect for the people around you. Always make time for others, laugh and smile – try to enjoy your job as you spend many hours at work.
