What was your first role in British Steel and what’s been your journey since?
I started my time at British Steel as an electrical apprentice. I had heard brilliant things about the apprenticeship that British Steel provides and I’ve had family working at British Steel. They told me all about the benefits of going through an apprenticeship such as gaining hands-on learning and experience while earning.
During my apprenticeship I began working with the IT team to develop my skills and put into practice what I’d learnt. Since my apprenticeship I have fully qualified as an electrician and moved into the IT department as a Field Services Engineer.
What does your day-to-day role involve?
There is such a mixture of roles we do as a team, and each day is so very different to the next that is a part of my job I love. I deal with fibre jobs liaising, splicing to testing and certification, when require I still work with electrics running in power etc. My job involves working on the telephony system setting up phone, working on the exchange, and repairing critical PC’s for plant. My day to day is very much a mixture of tools and desktop work.
What is your proudest achievement?
My proudest achievement is that I have been apart and won eFIXX 30 under 30 which is an award that recognises the passion, motivation to exceed expectations, contributions within their companies and skills of being within the electrical industry/trade, it is a source of inspiration to others that I am so proud to have been apart of.
Where do you see yourself within British Steel in 10 years’ time?
I continue to further my knowledge within my role and continue to pursue additional qualifications. I am now qualified in fibre and exploring this further, taking on jobs and looking be qualified with Sip and Telecommunications side of my job in the near future.
What advice would you give to other people considering a career at British Steel?
I would advise people considering an apprenticeship at British Steel to apply if the opportunity is there – it’s a great place to be and work. Not only is there hands-on learning but you’re earning a good wage throughout the whole process.
This kind of opportunity is great for the experiences and the learning that British Steel provides. They make you feel a part of the family and you’ll build amazing friendships as well! In later years, you’ll be able to say you’re proud to be a part of such an excellent company.
