British Steel searching for 40 new apprentices in Scunthorpe

Apply now! That’s the message from British Steel as time runs out to apply for 40 apprentice positions in Scunthorpe.

During National Apprentice Week, the company has urged people to seize the opportunity and join the 118 apprentices already based at its headquarters.

Paul Martin, British Steel’s Managing Director, said: “Since launch we have been inundated with applications for roles within British Steel, with thousands of people applying to join us.

“Throughout the years apprentices have played a huge role in our business and they will continue to do so as we work to build a sustainable future.

“We want to recruit and train our next generation of steelworkers and I would encourage anyone interested in the roles to apply before the closing date of March 31.”

Apprenticeships are being offered in various disciplines with British Steel looking to recruit 15 mechanical apprentices, 15 electrical apprentices and 5 functional apprentices.

There are also three electrical and two mechanical degree level apprenticeships for those finishing their A-levels or equivalent in 2017.

British Steel’s apprenticeship programme is delivered in partnership with North Lindsey College and Paul said: “All our apprentices are promised the very best training and excellent career prospects. These 40 roles are fantastic opportunities for people and emphasise the importance we place on developing our highly-skilled employees.”

The recruitment push comes just a week after 12 Teesside steelworkers started their careers in a partnership between British Steel and Middlesbrough College.

The manufacturing and technical apprentices, who are employed by Middlesbrough College, are being sponsored by the company and it is hoped they will join British Steel when they have completed their training.

And as part of National Apprenticeship Week, the company has been staging a series of events including sending some of our senior managers back to the apprentice workshop for our ‘Back to the Floor’ sessions designed to highlight the progression opportunities available to our apprentices.

Among those taking part has been Mark Ding, British Steel Plant Engineer Infrastructure. He said: “I began my Youth Training Scheme (YTS) with British Steel back in 1983. Since then I’ve enjoyed 34 brilliant years.

“There’s absolutely room to progress within this company. I started as a £25 per-week YTS apprentice and I’m now manager of a department.

“Being in the workshop today I was very impressed with the confidence and attitude of not only the apprentices, but the trainers as well. There isn’t a better place to start your career.”
