British Steel apprentices undertake charity work in the community

Apprentices from British Steel’s Scunthorpe site have continued giving a helping hand to the community by volunteering at Jerry Green’s Dog Rescue and Lindsey Lodge Hospice.

The latest round of community volunteering days was organised to coincide with National Apprenticeship Week 2017 – an event designed to celebrate the success and importance of apprenticeships.

British Steel’s Community Liaison Manager Rebecca Slater said: “It was brilliant to see our apprentices out in the community helping out some very worthy local charities.

“Our Building Stronger Communities framework was formed to give something back to the communities we operate in, and the apprentices have certainly done their bit; their work has provided a great service to both charities and was very well received.”

British Steel apprentices got stuck in at Jerry Green’s by clearing trees and bushes to help build a sensory garden for dogs, which can soothe stress and stimulate playfulness in the animals.

Ryan Garner, Base Craft apprentice, said: “Doing this type of work in the community is great, we’re doing something positive and putting something back into the community.”

Paige Chappill, Fundraising and Communications Officer for Jerry Green’s, said: “This is an amazing example of what teamwork can do.

“There is no way we would be able to achieve this without the help of British Steel’s apprentices.”

British Steel’s volunteer workforce also helped out their community partner Lindsey Lodge Hospice by giving trellises, benches and fences a fresh coat of paint in order to spruce up the outdoor areas in time for spring.

They also visited the Lindsey Lodge warehouse to help move stock to the charity’s seven retail shops.

Kaye Metcalfe, Retail Operations Manager at Lindsey Lodge, said: “We’re extremely pleased about this association with British Steel; the support they give us is so valuable. We look forward to ongoing two-way support in the future.”

British Steel is currently looking to recruit a further 40 apprentices in Scunthorpe.

Apprenticeships are being offered in various disciplines with the company looking to recruit 15 mechanical apprentices, 15 electrical apprentices and 5 functional apprentices.

There are also three electrical and two mechanical degree level apprenticeships for those finishing their A-levels or equivalent in 2017.
