A new chapter has been opened up for a group of schoolchildren with learning difficulties with the introduction of specialist audio equipment.
Our Building Stronger Communities programme has supported St Hugh’s School in Scunthorpe to purchase the specialist audio technology, allowing the pupils access to a greater range of books to develop their love of reading and boost their skills.
“Many of the children at St Hugh’s School have severe learning difficulties and find it difficult to access some of the reading material that might appeal to them,” said Scunthorpe Community Steering Group member and Environmental Specialist Johanna Geddes.
“By helping them provide this special audio equipment we hope to enrich their lives through literature and breakdown some of the barriers preventing them from accessing a wide range of books independently, therefore boosting their confidence and skills.”
St Hugh’s School caters for pupils between the age of 11 and 19 with a range of learning difficulties, including moderate and severe learning difficulties, autism spectrum disorders, profound and complex needs and language and communication issues.
St Hugh’s Head Teacher Tracy Millard said: “ The support from British Steel has helped us provide our pupils with the latest technology to enrich their literary experiences and encourage them to read for pleasure to further develop their love of literature and reading.”
Our Building Stronger Communities programme provides financial and in-kind support to charities and non-profit organisations to help support the economic and social wellbeing of the areas in which we operate. Further information about the scheme is available here.
