25 of our British Steel apprentices graduate and start permanent jobs

25 British Steel apprentices have graduated and started permanent full-time roles with the company in Scunthorpe.

The employees, who first joined the business as mechanical, electrical, and fabrication and welding apprentices in 2022, have recently completed comprehensive three-year training programmes equipping them for careers on-site.

Last night a graduation ceremony was staged to celebrate their achievements and as the company marked National Manufacturing Day, today, with a special event for students at its Scunthorpe steelworks, HR Director Nick Ashton said British Steel is building for the future.

“Congratulations to all our apprentices on completing their apprenticeships and securing full-time roles with the business as they now continue their transition to becoming craft team members within British Steel,” Nick said.

“They should be extremely proud of their achievements and the careers they are starting to build for themselves with British Steel.

“They are great assets to our business, and I wish them every success for the future.”

Among the successful apprentices is Billy Harrison, who has become a Mechanical Fitter at British Steel’s Scunthorpe Rod Mill after completing a mechanical apprenticeship.

Billy said: “I enjoyed learning from, and working with, the experienced Mechanical Fitters out on plant throughout my apprenticeship. I was given the opportunity to experience a multitude of mechanical jobs and learn many different hands-on skills and technical knowledge from all the different fitters I’ve worked with. I’m very thankful to all of them.”

Another mechanical apprenticeship graduate, Jack Shaw, has also started in a permanent position as a Mechanical Fitter at Scunthorpe Rail and Section Mill.

Jack said: “It was a great opportunity to learn, a good path to a great career.”

The company will soon stage another graduation ceremony for apprentices who have completed their training programmes and started full-time roles at British Steel’s mills in Teesside and Skinningrove.

British Steel has taken on over 60 apprentices this month in a range of disciplines across Scunthorpe, Teesside, and Skinningrove.

And today it opened its doors to more than 30 Scunthorpe area students to showcase the future careers people can build with the company.

Nick said: “National Manufacturing Day is a superb opportunity to demonstrate the importance of businesses like British Steel to the UK economy, and the exciting careers we offer. It has been a huge success, and we look forward to welcoming more people into the company as we undertake our transformation into a clean, green, and sustainable steelmaker.”

The company is recruiting into a range of roles which you can view here.
